Finding yourself in the dental office on the night of your work holiday party with a dental emergency is probably not topping this season’s to-do list. Dr. Christopher Hutton and team are here to give you some pro-tips to help you avoid a dental disaster and keep you smiling this holiday season.

1. Make it a Routine

We know it sounds simple, but having good hygiene habits is one of your best defenses against bacteria. Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste to keep your teeth merry and bright.

 2. Rinse Away Decay

Skip the sugary soda and juices this year and drink lots of water. You can also use water to swish around your mouth to wash away decay-causing bacteria until you can brush later.

 3. Be Nice to Your Teeth

Do not play the part of the Nutcracker this year. Biting down on hard shells can seriously damage your teeth and gums. Shell nuts before eating them and avoid extremely sticky treats like caramel or taffy to prevent a dental emergency. These sticky sweets are known to pull out fillings and crowns.

 4. Reach for the Scissors

Do not open gifts, rip tape, or break ribbons with your teeth. You can crack or break a tooth that may require a root canal and crown to fix.

 5. Stop Nail Biting

Make your New Year’s resolution to finally stop biting your nails. Nail biting may relieve stress momentarily but it can cause a prolonged period of stress by increasing facial pain, sensitive teeth, and jaw problems.
